We Bought A Zoo!
Well, not really. Although we did love the movie!
But we did buy chickens. Tiny, fuzzy, cute, peeping little baby chickens. Three of them. That was about four months ago.
Now they are somewhat moody, broody, squawking, anxious pooping machines who are (I think!) getting ready to start laying eggs.
The idea was to add to our small “urban farm” (1/4-acre back yard in the city), which already had a dog, a cat, a container garden, a sweet potato patch, countless lizards and birds and squirrels, and a 5-year-old helper.
This was just another step toward living close to the land … but for me, living close to the land also needs to be simple. I’m a busy, working mom!
I read and read about how chickens make good pets and are less maintenance than a dog. And you know what? So far, that’s true (if you don’t count the hard work of building the chicken coop.)
Even the cat and the dog seem happy with their new sisters. We’re pretty content with our little city zoo and cannot wait to eat fresh eggs from our back yard! (And stop spending $3/dozen on good eggs at the grocery store!) Should be soon … maybe end of this month. Stay tuned!
Have read a couple of of the articles on your web site now, and I truly like your style of blogging. I added it to my favorites blog web site list and will probably be checking back soon. 221495
